Raízes em Movimento | Educação na Natureza

LEARNING COMMUNITY IN NATURE

6–12 years | Barreiro • LiberArte Space

A nature-based learning space for children aged 6 to 12, where curiosity, autonomy and creativity are given space to grow.

Designed as support for homeschooling families, this programme offers a community learning environment where children investigate, build and deepen their interests through active participation.

What is this project?

Nature-Based Education | 6–12 years

The Raízes em Movimento Learning Community is an educational programme designed for children who learn outside conventional schooling or who are looking for a different educational approach.

Here, learning happens through experience, investigation and active participation, respecting each child’s rhythm and interests.

Pedagogical Approach

We are inspired by participatory pedagogies, where the child is recognised as competent, curious, capable of making decisions and an active participant in their own learning.

The adult takes on the role of facilitator, guide and learning partner, promoting a balance between freedom and responsibility while encouraging conscious autonomy.

Pedagogical Influences

Our practice is inspired by different educational approaches that value the child’s holistic development:

Forest School

Learning in nature, autonomy, confidence and a deep relationship with the environment.

Reggio Emilia

Active listening to the child, emergent projects and valuing expression through multiple languages.

Project-Based Pedagogy

Learning through long-term projects, active investigation and children as explorers.

Core Principles

Connection with nature as the central context for all activities

Respect for each child’s rhythm and interests

Learning through experience, art and investigation

Reflection as part of the learning process

Relationships as the foundation of learning and development

A balance between freedom and responsibility, creating a safe and challenging environment

Values That Guide Us

Respect

For others, oneself and the natural environment.

Autonomy

The ability to act, decide and participate responsibly.

Presence

Active listening, mindful attention and authentic connection.

Care & Affection

Safe, empathetic and meaningful relationships.

Risk

Conscious exploration of challenge, promoting confidence and development.

Community

Building trusting relationships and a sense of belonging.

What is a day in the community like?

Days alternate between moments of free exploration, projects in development and proposals that emerge from the group’s interests.

Children have opportunities to:

  • develop individual and group projects
  • build and experiment with different materials and tools
  • explore nature in a deeper and more investigative way
  • participate in artistic and expressive activities
  • investigate subjects that interest them
  • cooperate, discuss ideas and make decisions

There is also space for reflection, sharing and organisation of work, promoting autonomy and responsibility.

No rush. With time to explore, create and simply be a child.
